Suva’s Central Buses company has made the difficult decision to suspend operations along Gaji Rd after 6 PM due to growing safety concerns for both drivers and passengers. This action follows a troubling pattern of violence, including a recent stoning incident during a bus trip in the Lagilagi Housing area on Saturday night.

Central Buses CEO Mahendra Nair expressed the seriousness of the situation, stating that the attack was frightening for those on board. This ongoing issue, which has been occurring since December, particularly during the holiday period, has seen intoxicated individuals targeting buses with stones and water. According to Mr. Nair, “It didn’t just happen once, it happened many times.”

The recent attack posed a significant threat, as shattered glass from the stone projectiles caused panic among passengers. “If the glass hadn’t been there, someone would have been hit. It’s not safe,” Mr. Nair emphasized. The company has reported the incidents to local police and informed the Land Transport Authority about the escalating violence.

Mr. Nair highlighted that the company explored all possible options before resorting to service suspension, as drivers have expressed fears for their safety, and passengers – often weary workers returning home – have been left shaken by these attacks. The decision to halt evening services was not made lightly, but the priority remains the safety of all individuals involved. Central Buses plans to resume operations during these hours only once safe conditions are guaranteed for both passengers and drivers.

This situation underscores the importance of ensuring safe public transport and the need for community engagement to address the underlying issues contributing to such violent behaviors. It is hopeful that with concerted efforts from local authorities and the community, a solution can be found to restore safety for everyone relying on these services.
