The Minister for Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa, has called on the people of Suva to stay patient as the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) and the Suva City Council (SCC) work on upgrading the Suva Bus Stand. After conducting a site visit last week, Nalumisa informed the public that the restoration of the bus stand will be implemented in phases, with each stage addressing specific aspects of the infrastructure.

The first phase, which took place from December of last year to October this year, focused on improving drainage systems around the bus stand. According to the FRA, the next steps involve excavating and removing the existing base material. This material will be properly transported off-site and substituted with high-quality pavement material that adheres to specified standards for leveling and compacting.

Furthermore, Nalumisa anticipates that the subsequent phases of the project will be completed within 30 days, ensuring swift progress on these vital improvements.

This concerted effort to enhance the Suva Bus Stand follows ongoing discussions regarding the deteriorating state of roads at the bus terminal, which have been highlighted in recent news. There have been growing concerns among commuters, including bus operators, about increasing potholes and navigation challenges—especially during peak hours.

The proactive response from local authorities, including the SCC, demonstrates a commitment to addressing public concerns about transportation safety and efficiency. Thanks to ongoing cooperation with the FRA, there is optimism that the upcoming improvements will lead to a safer and more reliable experience for all who utilize the bus stand.

In summary, as the local government initiates these infrastructural upgrades, there is hope for enhanced commuting conditions in Suva, showcasing a dedicated effort to better public infrastructure for the community’s well-being and mobility.
