The Suva Western Bus Stand is undergoing a significant transformation with the removal of 23 bean cart stalls, some of which have been in place for over 20 years. This initiative marks the start of a long-awaited overhaul intended to modernize the area and create enhanced business opportunities for the vendors.

Rakesh Kumar, who has been running a bean cart and juice stall for two decades, expressed enthusiasm about the redevelopment following extensive discussions with the Suva City Council (SCC). He noted, “We’ve been negotiating with the City Council for months. They’ve assured us that our spots will remain after the rebuild. It’s time to let go of the old structures and embrace new, modern models that will help grow our businesses.”

The SCC has highlighted hygiene issues and reports of illicit activities as primary factors prompting this redevelopment. The new stalls are designed with contemporary aesthetics in mind, reminiscent of structures found at the Suva Municipal Market, aiming to cultivate an enhanced business atmosphere.

Filisita Sameke, another seasoned vendor with over ten years in the business, praised the council’s proactive measures. “For years, we worked in makeshift structures that were uncomfortable and inefficient. The council’s swift action will make our work easier and more appealing to customers,” she stated.

The newly revamped stalls aim to improve the overall atmosphere of the bus stand, promoting a safer and more hygienic environment for both vendors and patrons. Development representatives have assured vendors that the reconstruction will be completed within two to three months, with minimal disruptions anticipated. Current vendors, who pay an average of $32.70 per week for their spaces, believe that this investment will ultimately pay off.

This transformation represents a positive shift towards a more modernized and community-friendly market space, providing an opportunity for vendors to thrive in a new environment while addressing essential concerns of hygiene and safety.

Overall, this redevelopment stands as a testament to the local government’s commitment to enhancing public spaces for the benefit of all, fostering a more vibrant business ecosystem in Suva.
