The Suva Western Bus Stand is set to undergo a significant transformation with the demolition of 23 bean cart stalls, many of which have been in operation for over 20 years. This redevelopment marks the initiation of a long-awaited upgrade aimed at modernizing the area and providing enhanced business opportunities for local vendors.

Stall owner Rakesh Kumar, who has maintained a bean cart and juice stall for more than two decades, expressed his support for the changes following extensive consultations with the Suva City Council (SCC). “We’ve been negotiating with the City Council for months,” Kumar remarked, adding that the council has assured stall owners that their spots will remain following the reconstruction. He believes it is time to replace the old structures with new, modern designs that could promote business growth.

The SCC highlighted hygiene concerns and reports of illicit activities as primary motivators for the redevelopment. The new stalls are expected to reflect contemporary designs similar to those at the Suva Municipal Market, thereby fostering a more appealing business atmosphere.

Another long-time vendor, Filisita Sameke, who has been in the trade for over a decade, also expressed satisfaction with the proactive measures taken by the Council. “For years, we worked in makeshift structures that were uncomfortable and inefficient,” she shared. “The council’s swift action will make our work easier and more appealing to customers.”

The updated stalls aim to create a safer and more hygienic environment for both vendors and customers alike. Developers have assured vendors that the reconstruction will take approximately two to three months, with minimal disruption to business operations. Current vendors, who pay around $32.70 per week for their stall spaces, believe that the investment will ultimately be beneficial.

This redevelopment signifies not only a physical transformation of the bus stand but also a renewed hope for local vendors to thrive in a modernized and supportive business environment. The changes are expected to not only enhance the overall ambiance of the area but also positively affect the local economy by attracting more customers.

The positive outlook among the vendors and their enthusiasm for the development highlights the potential for growth and improvement within the local community.
