As the extensive renovation project at the Suva Bus Stand approaches completion, the Suva City Council is poised to enhance safety and convenience for public transportation users. This significant infrastructure upgrade, which began in February in collaboration with the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA), has prioritized minimizing disruptions for both bus operators and commuters.

Tevita Boseiwaqa, the Acting CEO of the Suva City Council, expressed optimism about the progress made, especially as various stages of the project near their conclusion. Key updates reveal that the underground drainage system is fully operational, and substantial work on the road and pavement upgrades has been achieved. Here’s a breakdown of the current status:

– Stage 1: Entire Bus Stand and Connecting Road – Underground Drainage Upgrade: **100% COMPLETE**

– Stage 2: Road and Pavement Upgrades:
– **Phase 1** (Rodwell Road Bus Stand Entry, inner lane): All milling, excavation, basecourse stabilization, and asphalt paving have been finalized, with only linemarking left to complete.
– **Phase 2** (Western Bus Stand & Escott St): Major works are complete, with linemarking currently at 20%.
– **Phase 3** (between Terminals 2 & 3): Major repairs are done with surface drainage at 50%, linemarking pending.
– **Phase 4** (between Terminals 1 & 2): Significant progress made with surface drainage about 45% complete.

The Council acknowledges the cooperation and patience of the public during this large-scale project and is excited to improve the city’s public areas and infrastructure moving forward. The renovation aims not just to upgrade facilities but to address longstanding issues such as poor drainage and uneven surfaces, fostering a safer and more pleasant travel experience for thousands of daily commuters.

These improvements mark a positive step towards fulfilling the community’s demand for better public transport conditions in Suva, reflecting a broader commitment by local authorities to enhance urban mobility and infrastructure. With project completion expected shortly, the community can look forward to utilizing a newly refurbished, efficient, and safer bus stand in the near future.
