The Suva Western Bus Stand is set to undergo significant renovations after the demolition of 23 long-standing bean cart stalls, with some vendors having operated for over 20 years. This redevelopment is aimed at modernizing the area and increasing opportunities for local businesses.
Rakesh Kumar, a stall owner for over two decades, expressed his approval of the changes following extensive discussions with the Suva City Council (SCC). He noted, “We’ve been negotiating with the City Council for months. They’ve assured us that we will retain our spots after the rebuild. It’s time to let go of the old structures and embrace new, modern models that will help grow our businesses.”
The SCC highlighted hygiene issues and reports of illicit activities as motivations for the project. The new stalls are expected to showcase contemporary designs, mirroring those found at the Suva Municipal Market, which will enhance the business environment. Filisita Sameke, another long-time vendor, also shared her satisfaction, acknowledging the council’s proactive stance. “For years, we worked in makeshift structures that were uncomfortable and inefficient,” she stated. “The council’s swift action will make our work easier and more appealing to customers.”
The redesigned bus stand is anticipated to improve the overall atmosphere, creating a safer and cleaner space for both vendors and customers. Developers have assured minimal disruption during the 2 to 3-month construction period for vendors who currently pay up to $32.70 weekly for their stalls, indicating that the investment will be beneficial in the long run.
This transformation presents an exciting opportunity for both the vendors and the community, as a modernized bus stand can attract more foot traffic and stimulate local commerce, ultimately benefiting everyone involved.
