The Suva Western Bus Stand is in the midst of a significant renovation following the removal of 23 bean cart stalls, some of which had been operating for over twenty years. This redevelopment signals a much-anticipated upgrade aimed at modernizing the area and expanding business opportunities for local vendors.
Rakesh Kumar, a stall owner who has served the community with his bean cart and juice stall for more than two decades, embraced the planned changes after thorough discussions with the Suva City Council (SCC). “We’ve been negotiating with the City Council for months,” Kumar stated, highlighting that they have been assured their business locations will be preserved post-reconstruction. He remarked, “It’s time to let go of the old structures and embrace new, modern models that will help grow our businesses.”
The SCC has articulated that the redevelopment is motivated by hygiene concerns and reports of illicit activities in the area. The new stalls are designed to reflect contemporary aesthetics similar to those found at the Suva Municipal Market, fostering a more professional and hygienic business environment.
Filisita Sameke, another seasoned vendor with over ten years of experience, praised the council’s proactive stance. “For years, we worked in makeshift structures that were uncomfortable and inefficient,” she said, noting that the changes will provide a better experience for both vendors and customers. She added, “The council’s swift action will make our work easier and more appealing to customers.”
The upgraded stalls are expected to enhance the overall environment of the bus stand, creating a safer and cleaner space for all users. Developers have assured stallholders that the reconstruction process will take approximately two to three months, with plans in place to minimize disruption. Despite current weekly space fees nearing $32.70, vendors feel confident that this investment will yield positive results in the long run.
