A man has been remanded in custody following accusations of stealing an elderly man’s bank card in Suva this week. Niraj Surend Prasad, 49, faces a charge of theft. During his court appearance at the Suva Magistrates Court, Prasad acknowledged the charge and opted to waive his right to legal counsel.
Police Prosecutor Salote Bola informed the court that full disclosures had been provided to the defense. The prosecution opposed bail, referencing Prasad’s prior convictions for theft as well as his history of absconding bail.
Magistrate Charles Ratakele has instructed Prasad to submit a formal bail application by next Monday, with the court scheduled to review this application in the following week. This case highlights ongoing concerns regarding repeat offenses and the legal system’s handling of such matters.
