Sustaining Fiji’s Riches: A Call to Action

The Minister for Fisheries and Forestry, Alitia Bainivalu, emphasized the importance of sustainable management of both land and marine resources during her address at the Ra Yaubula Day in Nanukuloa. She outlined the Government’s overarching goal to promote the responsible use of these resources.

Bainivalu explained, “Our aim is not to limit the utilization of these resources, but rather to ensure their abundance and sustainability for future generations.” She highlighted the Ministry of Fisheries and Forestry’s commitment to advancing strategies for the responsible use of natural resources and efforts to restore threatened species within Fiji’s ecosystems.

The Minister also addressed the effects of climate change on the Ra province, which covers an area of 129,149 hectares, noted for its extensive forest and mangrove ecosystems.

She reported that 182,158 trees have been planted across 264 hectares in Ra Province, supported by a financial contribution of around $82,000 in the past financial year.
