Tourism Minister Viliame Gavoka recently wrapped up an extensive tour of the Yasawa Islands, focusing on sustainable tourism development practices promoted by the Fiji National Sustainable Tourism Framework and the Government’s National Development Plan. His visit aimed to assess ongoing initiatives and ensure alignment with these pivotal objectives.
A key highlight of this tour was the emphasis on improving aviation infrastructure, particularly the development of an ATR72-capable aerodrome centrally located near Teci Village. This project is expected to facilitate greater access to these remote regions, enhancing tourism and stimulating economic activity while also being evaluated for its environmental impact.
Minister Gavoka also visited prominent resorts such as Blue Lagoon Resort, Turtle Island Resort, Barefoot Manta, and Barefoot Kuata. He expressed admiration for the marine conservation programs in place at Barefoot Manta, underscoring the synergy between tourism and environmental stewardship.
In a move to promote sustainable practices at the community level, the Ministry is looking into a new certification program for homestay operators. This initiative aims to create measurable criteria for cultural preservation and eco-friendly operations, aligning with the National Sustainable Tourism Framework.
This tour reaffirms the government’s commitment to fostering community involvement in tourism and echoes similar efforts highlighted in previous tours by Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica, who engaged with local businesses to tackle operational challenges and promote grassroots tourism initiatives. This collaborative approach is set to enhance local economies while preserving the natural beauty that attracts tourists to Fiji.
The proactive steps taken by the Fijian government not only aim to boost tourism infrastructure but also ensure that local communities can thrive in a sustainable tourism landscape. With a focus on cooperation, sustainability, and respect for local culture, there is a hopeful outlook for a flourishing tourism sector that benefits both the economy and the environment in the Yasawa Islands.
