Tourism Fiji’s CEO, Brent Hill, expressed pride in their ongoing partnership with the Pacific Recycling Foundation (PRF) during the recent Global Recycling Day celebrations in Lautoka. He highlighted the critical importance of protecting Fiji’s pristine environment, which is a significant draw for tourists, as the impact of waste on the nation’s natural beauty grows.
Hill noted that as Tourism Fiji promotes the islands’ clear oceans, stunning beaches, and beautiful rivers, it is essential to address the waste that threatens these beloved locations. To combat this, last year, they launched the initiative “If You Can’t Bin It, Bag It,” aimed at providing reusable bags to tourists, encouraging responsible waste disposal practices when visiting Fiji’s natural attractions.
This initiative aligns with a broader commitment between Tourism Fiji and the PRF, which has prioritized developing a circular economy and enhancing sustainability efforts. Through the I-Recycle program, the partnership is focused on improving recycling in key tourist areas, addressing litter problems, and fostering a cleaner environment for both visitors and residents. Additionally, the Visitor Carbon Footprint Program will allow tourists to offset their carbon emissions by engaging in sustainable practices during their stay.
This ongoing collaboration underscores the vital role of sustainability in Fiji’s tourism sector, promoting environmental stewardship and community involvement. Both Hill and Amitesh Deo, the founder of PRF, share a vision of integrating ecological responsibility into the tourism experience, essential for attracting eco-conscious travelers in an increasingly environmentally aware market.
Overall, the initiative presents a hopeful outlook for Fiji, illustrating how collective efforts in environmental conservation can lead to a sustainable tourism model that benefits both the islands’ natural resources and its communities.
