Sustainable Style Takes the Spotlight: A Queen’s Sarong Story

In an impressive showcase of cultural and environmental appreciation, Adi Marica Naceva Waqaniburotu, the representative from Labasa Divisional Hospital, won the Best Sarong award during the Global Night at the Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North.

The 22-year-old captivated attendees on Monday night at Subrail Park in Labasa with a sarong that conveyed a powerful message about organic farming. The design featured a graceful twist around the neck, signifying the beginning of a journey related to organic farming practices.

Adi Marica’s innovative presentation not only secured her the top award but also highlighted the importance of sustainable agriculture through a striking visual story. According to the pathology department attaché from Labasa Divisional Hospital, the knot in her sarong represented a strong dedication to nurturing the planet and promoting eco-friendly farming.

“After a fulfilling day on the farm, the sarong can smoothly transition to a stylish beach look with a knot below the bust,” Ms. Waqaniburotu explained. “It embodies relaxed sophistication, ideal for enjoying the coastal breeze.”

She further described her headpiece, crafted from leaves and vibrant flowers, which symbolized the produce from her organic farm. “I was overwhelmed to win this prize and teetered on the edge of tears as all the other contestants had stunning sarongs,” she reflected. “My sister and I worked together to create the sarong, which exemplifies sisterly unity, and it feels rewarding to see our efforts recognized.”

Adi Marica is currently a final-year student at Fiji National University, studying to earn a bachelor’s degree in medical laboratory science. She comes from Makadru, Matuku, Lau, with maternal ties to Taviya Village, Ovalau. Her advocacy is aimed at rejuvenating the North through organic farming initiatives.

“I truly believe that organic farming leads to a healthier and more sustainable future, and I am deeply passionate about it,” she stated.

She is one of nine contestants competing for the title of Miss Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North this Saturday.
