In an impressive celebration of cultural and environmental pride, Adi Marica Naceva Waqaniburotu, representing the Labasa Divisional Hospital, won the prestigious Best Sarong award during the Global Night at the Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North.

The 22-year-old captivated audiences on Monday evening at Subrail Park in Labasa with a sarong that told a story of organic farming. The garment, elegantly wrapped around her neck, symbolized the beginning of a journey centered on the principles of organic agriculture.

Adi Marica’s inventive presentation not only secured her the top prize but also highlighted the importance of sustainable farming through a visually striking display. A representative from the pathology department of Labasa Divisional Hospital noted that the knot of the sarong represented a strong commitment to caring for the earth and promoting sustainable agricultural practices.

“After a fulfilling day on the farm, the sarong easily shifts to a stylish beach look with a knot just below the bust,” Ms. Waqaniburotu shared. “It embodies relaxation and sophistication, perfectly suited for enjoying the coastal breeze.”

She explained that her headpiece was crafted from leaves and vibrant flowers, symbolizing the fruits and vegetables of the organic farm. “I was in disbelief when I won the award; I was almost moved to tears, considering how all the other contestants had stunning sarongs,” she remarked.

“My sister and I collaborated on creating the sarong, which demonstrates sisterly unity and the outcome of our hard work,” she added. Currently, she is a final-year student at Fiji National University, studying for a bachelor’s degree in medical laboratory science.

Hailing from Makadru in Matuku, Lau, and with maternal ties to Taviya Village in Ovalau, her advocacy focuses on revitalizing the North through organic farming. “I truly believe that organic farming is a vital step towards a healthier and sustainable future, and it is a cause I am deeply passionate about,” she stated.

Adi Marica is one of nine contestants competing for the Miss Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North title, with the final event taking place on Saturday.
