In an impressive showcase of cultural pride and environmental awareness, Adi Marica Naceva Waqaniburotu, representing the Labasa Divisional Hospital, won the Best Sarong award during the Global Night at the Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North.
The 22-year-old captivated the audience at Subrail Park in Labasa with a sarong that told the story of organic farming. The design began with a delicate twist around the neck, symbolizing her journey rooted in sustainable farming practices.
Adi Marica not only received accolades for her creativity but also highlighted the importance of sustainable agriculture through her visually striking presentation. According to her, the knot in the sarong represents a strong commitment to nurturing the earth and promoting sustainable farming initiatives.
She explained, “After a fulfilling day on the farm, the sarong transitions effortlessly to a stylish beach look with a knot below the bust, embodying relaxed sophistication perfect for enjoying the coastal breeze.”
Her headpiece, crafted from leaves and vibrant flowers, symbolizes the produce of organic farms. Adi Marica expressed her disbelief at winning the award, sharing, “I was surprised and nearly cried as all the other contestants had beautiful sarongs too.”
The sarong was a collaborative effort made with her sister, reflecting their unity and the benefits of hard work. Adi Marica is currently a final-year student at Fiji National University, studying for a bachelor’s degree in medical laboratory science. She has roots in Makadru, Matuku, Lau, and her maternal lineage connects her to Taviya Village, Ovalau.
Her advocacy centers around rejuvenating the Northern region through organic farming. She stated, “I believe that organic farming is a pathway to a healthier and sustainable future, and I am very passionate about it.”
Adi Marica is one of the nine contestants competing for the Miss Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North title, set to take place on Saturday.
