In a remarkable exhibition of cultural and environmental pride, Adi Marica Naceva Waqaniburotu, representing the Labasa Divisional Hospital, won the Best Sarong award during the Global Night at the Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North.
The 22-year-old captivated the audience on Monday night at Subrail Park in Labasa with a sarong that transcended traditional attire, narrating a story of organic farming. The design started with an elegant twist around the neck, representing a journey grounded in organic farming principles.
Adi Marica’s innovative presentation not only secured her the top award but also highlighted the importance of sustainable agriculture in a striking way. A representative from the pathology department at Labasa Divisional Hospital noted that the knot in the sarong symbolized a strong commitment to caring for the earth and fostering sustainable farming practices.
“After a fulfilling day on the farm, the sarong effortlessly transitions to a stylish beach look with a knot below the bust,” Ms. Waqaniburotu shared. “It embodies relaxed elegance, perfect for enjoying the coastal breeze.”
She explained that her headpiece was crafted from leaves and vibrant flowers, symbolizing the fruits and vegetables from the organic farm.
“I couldn’t believe I won the prize; I was so surprised that I almost cried since all the other contestants had beautiful sarongs,” she remarked. “My sister and I created the sarong together, showcasing the unity of sisters, and it feels like our hard work has paid off.”
Adi Marica is currently a final-year student at Fiji National University, pursuing a bachelor’s degree in medical laboratory science. She is originally from Makadru, Matuku, Lau, and has maternal connections to Taviya Village, Ovalau. Her advocacy centers around revitalizing the North through organic farming.
“I firmly believe that organic farming leads to a healthier and more sustainable future, and I am very passionate about it,” she stated.
She is one of nine contestants competing for the title of Miss Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North this Saturday.
