Sustainable Futures: Fiji’s Call to Preserve Land and Ocean Resources

The Minister for Fisheries and Forestry, Alitia Bainivalu, emphasized the importance of sustainable utilization of both land and ocean resources during her address at the Ra Yaubula Day in Nanukuloa. She highlighted the government’s commitment to ensuring that these resources are used wisely without compromising their availability for future generations. Bainivalu stated the ministry’s focus on implementing strategies that promote the careful use of natural resources, while working to revive endangered species in Fiji’s forests and oceans.

She also addressed the effects of climate change on the Ra province, which covers an area of 129,149 hectares, rich in forest and mangrove ecosystems. Since the initiative began, a total of 182,158 trees have been planted across 264 hectares in Ra Province, with a financial investment of around $82,000 allocated in the last financial year.
