In a remarkable showcase of cultural and environmental awareness, Adi Marica Naceva Waqaniburotu, representing the Labasa Divisional Hospital, won the Best Sarong award during the Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North’s Global Night.

The 22-year-old captivated the audience on Monday evening at Subrail Park in Labasa with a sarong that transcended mere fashion; it told a story of organic farming. The garment began with an elegant twist around the neck, symbolizing the beginning of a journey grounded in organic agriculture principles.

Adi Marica’s innovative presentation not only secured her the prestigious accolade but also highlighted the importance of sustainable farming in a visually striking way. A representative from the Labasa Divisional Hospital’s pathology department remarked that the knot in the sarong represented a profound dedication to nurturing the planet and promoting sustainable agriculture.

“After a fulfilling day on the farm, the sarong easily transforms into a stylish beach ensemble with a knot just below the bust,” Ms. Waqaniburotu shared. “It embodies relaxed sophistication, ideal for enjoying the coastal breeze.”

She added, “My headpiece was crafted from leaves and vibrant flowers, representing the fruits and vegetables grown on the organic farm. I was overwhelmed to win the award; I was nearly in tears because all the other contestants had stunning sarongs as well.”

“The sarong was a collaborative effort made with my sister, highlighting the bond between us and showcasing that our hard work has paid off,” she continued.

Currently, she is in her final year at Fiji National University, pursuing a bachelor’s degree in medical laboratory science. Originally from Makadru, Matuku in Lau, she also has maternal ties to Taviya Village in Ovalau. Her advocacy centers around revitalizing the North through organic farming.

“I firmly believe that organic farming paves the way for a healthier and sustainable future, and I am deeply passionate about this cause,” she stated.

Adi Marica is one of nine contestants competing for the title of Miss Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North on Saturday.
