In a remarkable showcase of cultural and environmental pride, Adi Marica Naceva Waqaniburotu, representing the Labasa Divisional Hospital, won the Best Sarong award at the Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North’s Global Night. The 22-year-old captivated the audience on Monday night at Subrail Park in Labasa with a sarong that served as a testament to organic farming.
The design of the sarong began with an elegant twist around the neck, symbolizing a journey grounded in organic farming values. Adi Marica’s innovative presentation not only secured her the top accolade but also highlighted the importance of sustainable agriculture in a visually striking way.
The pathology department attaché from Labasa Divisional Hospital explained that the knot of the sarong represented a strong commitment to nurturing the environment and promoting sustainable farming practices. “Following a rewarding day on the farm, the sarong effortlessly transforms into a stylish beach look with a knot just below the bust,” Ms. Waqaniburotu shared. “It embodies a relaxed sophistication, ideal for feeling the coastal breeze.”
Her headpiece, crafted from leaves and vibrant flowers, symbolized the fruits and vegetables from her organic farm. Adi Marica expressed her disbelief at winning, admitting, “I was astounded and nearly cried, considering that all the other contestants showcased beautiful sarongs.” She noted that her sister assisted in creating the sarong, emphasizing their sisterly unity and the payoff of their hard work.
Currently in her final year at Fiji National University, Adi Marica is studying for a bachelor’s degree in medical laboratory science. She comes from Makadru, Matuku, Lau, with maternal connections to Taviya Village in Ovalau. Her advocacy centers on rejuvenating the North through organic farming. “I believe that organic farming leads to a healthier and more sustainable future, and I am incredibly passionate about it,” she stated.
Adi Marica is one of nine contestants competing for the Miss Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North crown this Saturday.
