Seven sailors involved in the docking incident of the Republic of Fiji Navy’s new vessel, RFNS Timo, have been suspended without pay. This was confirmed by Commander of the Republic of Fiji Navy, Commodore Humphrey Tawake, as investigations into the incident are ongoing.

The RFNS Timo, gifted by the Australian government, experienced minor damage to its stern during a berthing operation at the Walu Bay Navy Pier on December 19. The damage occurred while the vessel was being brought in from Australia, replacing the decommissioned RFNS Puamau, which had run aground earlier in the year.

Commodore Tawake explained that the incident resulted from a mix of strong winds and limited docking space due to nearby commercial vessels. Some of the sailors are alleged to have been intoxicated during the incident. “The disciplinary process has taken its course on those sailors involved and that is where we are while further investigations are ongoing,” he stated. Although they are currently suspended, they remain members of the force until the completion of the investigation.

Additionally, Commander Tawake noted that the Navy is working on the necessary approvals for the disposal of the RFNS Puamau, with the court martial process expected to begin this month.

This situation highlights the importance of accountability within military operations, especially regarding safety protocols during docking activities. With ongoing investigations, there is a valuable opportunity for the Navy to reinforce training and ensure future incidents are prevented. This commitment to improvement can lead to a stronger naval force moving forward, prioritizing safety and professionalism.
