Seven sailors from the Republic of Fiji Navy have been suspended without pay following a docking incident involving the new vessel, RFNS Timo, which occurred on December 19. This was confirmed by Commodore Humphrey Tawake, who stated that investigations are ongoing.

The RFNS Timo, recently acquired from Australia to succeed the decommissioned RFNS Puamau, sustained minor damage to its stern while docking at Walu Bay Navy Pier. The incident happened during med-mooring operations when challenging conditions, including gusty winds and limited docking space due to nearby commercial vessels, contributed to the mishap.

Reports indicate that some of the sailors may have been intoxicated while performing their duties on the day of the incident. Commodore Tawake emphasized that a disciplinary process is in place for those involved, although they still remain members of the force. Further investigations will lead to additional disciplinary measures.

As part of ongoing developments, the Navy is also seeking the necessary approvals to dispose of the RFNS Puamau, which ran aground in the Lau waters earlier this year. Additionally, a court-martial process for the implicated sailors is expected to commence this month.

This situation emphasizes the need for accountability in the naval forces, especially when operational safety and the integrity of resources are concerned. The Navy’s commitment to investigating this incident reflects a responsible approach to governance and ensures that such occurrences are addressed promptly.

In the future, this could serve as a learning opportunity for the Navy to reinforce training and operational protocols, ultimately enhancing the safety and efficiency of its maritime operations.
