Two men, Eseki Nacegu, 20, and Josefa Natadra, 22, have each received a three-year suspended sentence after being convicted of aggravated robbery involving the theft of a pair of canvas shoes and a $7 cap. The sentencing took place at the High Court in Lautoka, with Justice Aruna Aluthge presiding.
The court case revealed that the two victims were approached by a group of individuals while walking along Ratu Mara Rd. During an attempted exchange of clothing, the situation escalated when three boys began to assault one of the victims, while the other was similarly attacked.
Justice Aluthge emphasized the importance of deterrent punishment for such offenses, which have been increasingly common in the community. However, the judge also noted that first-time, young offenders who acknowledge their wrongdoing should be given a chance for rehabilitation.
No weapons were used in the commission of the crime, and the court described the incident as somewhat optimistic, which may imply a lower level of severity. Both Nacegu and Natadra expressed remorse for their actions, with Nacegu highlighting his responsibilities as a husband to a pregnant wife and a supporter of his sisters’ education, while Natadra mentioned his role as the sole provider for his eight-month-old child.
Under their sentences, Nacegu will serve six months of his 24-month term, with the remaining 18 months suspended, and Natadra will serve three months of an 18-month term, with 12 months suspended for three years.
This case serves as a reminder of the importance of addressing youth crime with a balanced approach that considers both accountability and the potential for rehabilitation. The decision to provide suspended sentences reflects a hope for personal growth and transformation for these young men, encouraging them to make better choices moving forward.
