A police officer, who was found guilty of assaulting his pregnant wife, has had his 12-month custodial sentence suspended for three years. The incident occurred when the officer, under the influence of alcohol, attempted to silence his wife by placing a hand around her neck as she slept. The victim filed a report with the Ba Police Station and was found to have abrasions and a bruise during her medical examination. Magistrate Namrata Mishra emphasized that, as a law enforcement officer, the accused should have been aware of the ramifications of his actions. A permanent Domestic Violence Restraining Order has been imposed against him.
In a separate case, the lawsuit of an Australian national against the Commissioner of Police over the loss of personal belongings valued at $40,000 was dismissed. Cecil Quai Hoi, who was taken into custody for murder suspicion in 2008, had his belongings seized by police. Despite being acquitted in 2010, Quai Hoi alleges misappropriation of his property by the authorities. Justice Mohamed Mackie concluded that Quai Hoi failed to take timely action to reclaim his belongings and consequently dismissed the case without awarding costs.
Meanwhile, a conviction has been made in the case of a man accused of the fatal robbery and murder of a 76-year-old woman in Koronivia, Nausori, in 2023. Vacolo Qio, who chose to remain silent during his trial, was found guilty based on circumstantial evidence and eyewitness testimonies. He was seen with the victim’s possessions shortly after her murder. Although burglary charges could not be substantiated, the High Court ruled on his guilt for murder and theft. His sentencing hearing is scheduled for September 25.
