Suspended Sailors: What Went Wrong with Fiji Navy’s New Vessel?

Spread the love

Seven sailors from the Republic of Fiji Navy have been suspended without pay following an incident involving the newly acquired vessel RFNS Timo. This was confirmed by Commander Commodore Humphrey Tawake while investigations are still underway.

The RFNS Timo, which recently arrived from Australia as a replacement for the decommissioned RFNS Puamau, experienced minor damage to its stern while docking at Walu Bay Navy Pier on December 19. The incident occurred during med-mooring operations, and mistakes were attributed to gusty winds and limited space created by nearby commercial vessels.

Reports indicated that some sailors may have been under the influence of alcohol during the event. In light of the situation, Commodore Tawake stated that disciplinary measures are in place, and those involved have been suspended until the completion of ongoing investigations. He assured that these sailors remain active members of the force during this period.

Additionally, Commodore Tawake noted that the process for disposing of the decommissioned RFNS Puamau, which ran aground in June, is underway. Plans for a court martial for involved personnel are set to begin this month.

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of safety and professionalism in naval operations. With proper investigation and accountability, the Republic of Fiji Navy can continue to foster a culture of discipline and respect within its ranks. Moving forward, this could lead to improved training and protocols to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
