Suspended Sailors Under Investigation After Fiji Navy Docking Incident

Seven sailors have been suspended without pay in connection with the December 19 docking incident involving the Republic of Fiji Navy’s new vessel, RFNS Timo. This suspension was confirmed by Commander Commodore Humphrey Tawake, who noted that investigations are still ongoing.

The RFNS Timo, which was recently gifted by the Australian government to replace the decommissioned RFNS Puamau, suffered minor damage to its stern during a docking procedure at Walu Bay Navy Pier. The incident occurred as sailors from the Republic of Fiji Military Forces Naval Division brought the vessel in from Australia.

Commodore Tawake explained that the damage resulted from a combination of gusty winds and limited docking space, complicated by the presence of commercial vessels nearby. Additionally, reports suggest that some sailors may have been intoxicated while on duty that day.

“The disciplinary process has been initiated for those involved, and they will remain suspended until investigations are completed,” said Commodore Tawake. He reassured that these sailors are still part of the force but are undergoing necessary disciplinary actions.

In light of the RFNS Puamau’s grounding in June, the navy is also seeking approval for its disposal, with plans for a court martial process to begin this month.

This incident underscores the importance of safety and accountability, particularly in maritime operations. While the situation is serious, it also presents an opportunity for the Republic of Fiji Navy to reinforce its commitment to training and operational discipline, ensuring future incidents can be avoided.

Summary: Seven sailors from the Republic of Fiji Navy have been suspended without pay amid ongoing investigations into a docking incident involving the new RFNS Timo vessel, which sustained minor stern damage. The incident was attributed to gusty winds and confined docking space, with reports of intoxication among some sailors. The navy is also addressing the status of the grounded RFNS Puamau, with court martial proceedings expected to commence soon.
