The case against Elizabeth Sautu, a suspended police officer accused of stealing $3,000 from a 66-year-old man in Sigatoka last year, has been postponed to the 27th of this month. Sautu faces one count of theft and made an appearance at the Suva Magistrates Court.

During today’s court proceedings, Defence Lawyer Joji Cakau requested an additional seven days to file an application on urgent grounds, as the defense plans to contest the admissibility of Sautu’s caution interview. Cakau expressed concerns about how the caution interview was conducted and aims to have it excluded from the evidence.

The State did not oppose this request, and Senior Resident Magistrate Sufia Humza granted it, allowing for the matter to be adjourned until the 27th for the filing of the necessary application. Sautu remains on bail while the investigations and pre-trial procedures continue.

This case highlights ongoing issues within the justice system regarding the conduct of law enforcement officers and their accountability. The proceedings will be closely watched as they unfold, and the outcome may have implications for both Sautu and the integrity of the police force.
