The tribunal investigating suspended Director of Public Prosecutions, Christopher Pryde, for alleged misconduct includes various notable witnesses, such as Minister for Justice Siromi Turaga and Minister for Sugar Industry Charan Jeath Singh, along with Assistant Minister for Agriculture Tomasi Tunabuna. The proceedings have garnered significant attention due to the serious nature of the allegations.

During his testimony, Assistant Minister Tunabuna expressed concerns about the appropriateness of Pryde and former Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum appearing together in public, especially amidst ongoing investigations into Sayed-Khaiyum. Tunabuna described the conversation he observed between the two, lasting over 30 minutes, as noteworthy, emphasizing that their visible expressions indicated the discussion’s importance. He found it troubling that Pryde did not take steps to avoid being seen with Sayed-Khaiyum, given the context of media reports regarding an investigation.

Tunabuna confirmed that a photo taken by him, which was submitted as evidence in the case, depicted their interaction. However, he was not close enough to overhear their conversation, relying instead on their body language to gauge the seriousness of the situation.

In response to the ongoing inquiry, Roopesh Singh, representing the Fiji Law Society, remarked that the testimonies provided by the witnesses were based on visual perception rather than actual conversations, urging the Court to evaluate the evidence accordingly.

The tribunal’s proceedings have been adjourned until tomorrow at 10 a.m., indicating that this investigation will continue to unfold.

This situation underscores the significance of transparency and professionalism within public offices, reiterating the importance of upholding ethical standards in governance. As the investigation progresses, it holds the potential to influence public trust and ensure accountability at higher levels of government. The hopeful perspective is that these proceedings will lead to necessary reforms and reinforce a commitment to integrity in public service.
