The report from the Tribunal regarding the suspension of Christopher Pryde, the former Director of Public Prosecutions, is set to be released to the public. However, this will occur only after the President, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, has reviewed the report and sought necessary consultations and advice. This process has been delayed due to official holidays during the Christmas and New Year period.

Pryde, who held the DPP position since 2011, was suspended on April 13, 2023, due to allegations of misbehavior related to his association with former Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum. As stipulated in the Fijian Constitution, a Tribunal was formed to investigate these allegations, which was chaired by Justice Anare Tuilevuka, along with Justices Chaitanya Lakshman and Samuela Qica.

Pryde has requested the President’s office to expedite the release of the report, noting that, per constitutional guidelines, if there is insufficient evidence of misbehavior, his suspension should be lifted, and his salary reinstated. He expressed concern over the financial hardship he has endured during his suspension, which has lasted close to 21 months.

The President’s Office confirmed that the report would be made public once the necessary steps have been completed after the holiday season. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has refrained from commenting on the matter, as he believes it falls outside his jurisdiction.

This situation highlights not only the ongoing process within the judicial system but also emphasizes the importance of timely resolutions in matters of public office. Transparency and adherence to constitutional guidelines are vital to maintaining public trust.

In a hopeful perspective, once the President reviews and acts on the findings, it could pave the way for a clearer path regarding the responsibilities of judicial officers and how allegations of misconduct are handled efficiently, thereby reinforcing the integrity of Fiji’s legal system. The emphasis on due process suggests a commitment to fairness, ultimately benefitting all parties involved.
