The trial involving Tevita Kapawale, accused of the alleged murders of five crew members aboard the FV Tiro II on May 18, 2021, commenced yesterday in the High Court of Suva. Kapawale is facing five counts of murder, one count of attempted murder, and one count of criminal intimidation. The victims include three Indonesians and two Fijians.

Kaminieli Tucama, a former fisherman and one of the survivors, was the first witness to testify. After hiding for almost two days in the engine room, surviving on only a bottle of water, Tucama managed to contact help, leading to his and another survivor’s rescue by a New Zealand helicopter responding to their distress signals.
