Surveying: The Unsung Hero of Nation-Building

Surveying plays a vital role in nation-building, according to Dr. Raijeli Taga, the outgoing permanent secretary for Lands and Mineral Resources. Speaking at the Fiji Institute of Surveyors Congress in Nadi, Dr. Taga highlighted the significance of surveying in achieving socio-economic development. She noted that it forms the foundation for various development projects, ensures property owners’ security, confirms the validity of land titles, and reinforces a nation’s sovereignty over its land and maritime areas.

Dr. Taga emphasized that surveying entails rigorous effort, requiring both physical fitness and mental resilience, particularly given the challenging terrains in Fiji. She expressed appreciation for advancements in technology that are transforming surveying practices, while underscoring the continuous need for ethical behavior and transparency within the profession.

She urged surveyors to stay informed and enhance their skills in light of new best practices, methodologies, and innovations. Dr. Taga also acknowledged the importance of addressing emerging challenges such as climate change, urban and rural development planning, and the issues associated with informal settlements.

In her closing remarks, she commended the Fiji Institute of Surveyors and the Surveyors Registration Board for their dedication to maintaining high standards and for organizing the conference.
