Dr. Raijeli Taga, the outgoing permanent secretary for Lands and Mineral Resources, emphasized the vital role of surveying in nation-building during her address at the Fiji Institute of Surveyors Congress in Nadi on Saturday. She stated that surveying is essential for the socio-economic development of a country and serves as a foundation for progress.
Dr. Taga highlighted that effective surveying is crucial for development projects as it ensures property security, validates land titles, and reinforces a nation’s sovereignty over its territory, both on land and at sea. She noted the physical and mental challenges surveyors face when working in the demanding terrains of Fiji.
While acknowledging advancements in technology that are transforming surveying practices, Dr. Taga stressed the importance of ethical conduct and transparency in the profession. She encouraged surveyors to continually enhance their skills through new methodologies and innovations to address emerging issues such as climate change and urban planning.
Furthermore, she commended the efforts of the Fiji Institute of Surveyors and the Surveyors Registration Board for maintaining high professional standards and organizing the conference.
