Surge in Vessels Triggers Congestion at Fiji’s Suva Port

More than 4,000 containers and 10 vessels have been managed at Suva Port over the past week, leading to heavy congestion, according to Fiji Ports Terminal Ltd (FPTL). The surge in maritime traffic has resulted from multiple vessels arriving in clusters after experiencing delays at East Asian and Pacific Island ports.

In a public notice, FPTL acknowledged that the influx has significantly hampered quay and yard operations, affecting both the delivery of import containers and the loading of exports. The company highlighted that many importers tend to collect their containers only on the third or last free day, which, compounded by limited clearance during weekends and after hours, exacerbates the congestion.

To alleviate the situation, FPTL is urging importers to collect their containers promptly once discharged, which would help maintain adequate yard space for incoming shipments. While FPTL recognizes that the ongoing congestion is beyond its control—as it must accommodate all arriving vessels—it assures stakeholders that efforts are underway to process cargo expediently.

The challenges faced by Suva Port echo broader issues within maritime logistics, similar to those reported previously where port congestion stemmed from unpredictable shipping schedules and weather conditions. Last year, the port faced similar challenges with vessel arrivals clustering due to delays caused by adverse weather in the region and constraints experienced at other international ports.

FPTL has also raised concerns about potential future disruptions if shipping schedules continue to remain inconsistent and vessels keep arriving closely together. Stakeholders can expect timely updates as the situation evolves, underlining the company’s commitment to enhancing the operational efficiency of its terminal.

Amid these challenges, there is a glimmer of hope as FPTL is reportedly looking into various technological advancements and operational improvements to expand capacity and better manage the increased demands of maritime traffic. This proactive approach aims at mitigating the issues of congestion and ensuring streamlined operations in the long run, benefiting trade and commerce in Fiji.
