Surge in Suva Port Container Volume Amid Global Trade Challenges

Suva Port experienced an increase in container volume in August, according to data from Fiji Ports Terminal Limited. The port recorded 8,815 containers in July, which increased to 9,658 in August, marking a difference of 843 containers, as noted by Chief Executive Officer Hasthika Dela.

In August, Suva Port welcomed 23 container vessels. Meanwhile, Lautoka Port recorded a container volume of 6,937 in July, but experienced a slight decline of 346 containers in August.

Mr. Dela highlighted ongoing global challenges that ports face, including geopolitical tensions, labor shortages, rising costs, supply and demand mismatches, as well as environmental and regulatory changes.

In August, Suva Port saw the arrival of various vessels including two car carriers, one clinker, four oil tankers, one passenger cruise ship, and a Navy vessel. Similarly, Lautoka Port hosted 18 container vessels and two wheat bulk carriers during the month.
