The Land Transport Authority (LTA) and the Fiji Police Force are set to bolster road safety measures by deploying additional traffic patrols and checkpoints in high-risk areas and accident-prone intersections. This initiative comes in response to a serious traffic accident in Vitogo along Kings Road, where a collision between a bus and a twin cab utility vehicle resulted in 18 individuals being hospitalized at Lautoka Hospital.
Public Works, Meteorological Services, and Transport Minister Filipe Tuisawau expressed his deep sympathies towards those injured and their families. He emphasized the critical need for all road users to exercise heightened vigilance and strictly adhere to road safety regulations.
The joint enforcement action, known as the National Joint Operations Order, aims not only to enhance road safety but also to reduce road fatalities and ensure compliance with traffic rules. Minister Tuisawau pointed out that this initiative is especially timely as it coincides with the festive season, which runs from November 1 to January 31, a period known for increased road traffic due to holiday celebrations and gatherings.
As of November 11, there have been 51 reported road fatalities, reflecting a commendable decrease from the 71 fatalities recorded during the same timeframe last year. This positive trend indicates the effectiveness of ongoing road safety efforts and highlights the importance of community engagement and responsibility in reducing accidents.
This initiative presents a hopeful perspective on road safety in Fiji, with a collective effort from governing bodies and the public to ensure safer roads during a busy season. By remaining vigilant and adhering to road safety rules, the community can contribute to a further reduction in accidents and enhance the overall safety of the roads.
