A 40-year-old man has been charged with assault causing actual bodily harm against his 38-year-old wife, while a separate case involves a 38-year-old man accused of assaulting a 41-year-old woman and causing actual bodily harm. These incidents are part of a larger report released by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions detailing crime statistics for non-sexual violence offences in November 2024.
In a more severe case, a 49-year-old man faces charges for intent to cause grievous harm after allegedly stabbing a victim in the back with scissors during an altercation. Another 41-year-old man was charged for an act intending to cause grievous harm but had his case discontinued as the victim could not be reached.
The report also covers a series of aggravated robbery and burglary incidents, which included break-ins at homes and shops, and street muggings both during the day and at night. Notably, a 17-year-old boy and a 19-year-old man have been charged with burglary and theft.
In an alarming incident involving educational institutions, two men aged 34 and 29 were charged with aggravated burglary for allegedly breaking into Tilak High School in Lautoka. They are accused of damaging property, which included destruction of computer screens and school furniture. Similarly, two 19-year-old men were charged after allegedly breaking into Kids First Kindergarten in Suva, stealing furniture and other educational materials.
In total, November saw 21 individuals charged with 27 counts of non-sexual violence offences, which include serious charges such as murder, attempted murder, aggravated robbery, aggravated burglary, and theft. Among those charged were two juveniles, highlighting a concerning trend in youth involvement in crime. Remarkably, of the 27 counts, 13 victims have been identified, and in two cases, the accused were related to the victims.
This report underscores the ongoing challenge of violence and property crime in the community, but it also reflects the efforts of law enforcement to address these issues. By continuing to work towards better prevention strategies and community engagement, there is hope for reducing these incidents in the future and fostering a safer environment for everyone.
