An alarming increase in expectant mothers testing positive for Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and substance abuse has been reported at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital (CWMH) maternity ward. According to Salote Tukana, the nurse unit manager at the maternity ward, there is also a growing trend of mothers presenting with Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) such as diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease.
Recent statistics from the Ministry of Health and Medical Services revealed that from January to June 2024, there were 552 new HIV diagnoses. This marks a significant rise compared to 415 cases reported in 2023 and 245 cases in 2022. Given this context, Ms. Tukana expressed concern over the impact of NCDs during pregnancy, highlighting the added responsibilities they present for healthcare providers.
When mothers are free from NCDs, the situation is relatively manageable, allowing for quicker recovery and discharge. However, those with NCDs and complications create a heavier burden on healthcare resources. Ms. Tukana stated that NCDs are becoming a focal point for the Ministry of Health as they work to address the public health crisis associated with these chronic conditions.
The demographic trends of HIV diagnoses are particularly concerning, with 73 percent of new cases occurring in individuals under the age of 39. Notably, young people aged 15 to 24 years comprise a significant portion of the newly diagnosed population. Ms. Tukana highlighted a troubling correlation between drug use and the rise in HIV cases, particularly among the iTaukei youth.
In a heartfelt plea to the young people, she urged them to reject drugs, emphasizing that engaging in substance abuse leads to a more complex set of challenges.
This situation calls for a multi-faceted approach, combining public health awareness, education, and community support, particularly for vulnerable populations. The increasing rates of both HIV and NCDs present a unique opportunity for health authorities to enhance preventive measures and promote healthier lifestyle choices among expectant mothers and the broader community.
The urgency of addressing these health issues offers the chance for greater collaboration and innovation in health care practices, aiming toward improved outcomes for both mothers and babies. Through collective efforts, there is hope for a future with better health awareness and reduced stigma around these critical health concerns.
