Health authorities are alarmed by the increase in HIV/AIDS cases in Lautoka, as reported on December 2, 2004. Dr. Arvin Chaudhry, head of the Family Health Clinic Western, described the trend as “shocking,” particularly for a city of Lautoka’s size. Since his arrival from England, Dr. Chaudhry identified seven new HIV/AIDS cases, raising the total number of affected individuals in Lautoka to 22.

Dr. Chaudhry expressed concerns that the actual number of cases could be significantly higher. He indicated that during counseling sessions, many patients reported multiple sexual partners and uncertainty about how they contracted the virus. He suggested the number of infections might multiply by five to ten times.

The cases predominantly affect individuals aged 20 to 35, highlighting a troubling demographic trend. In a related note, Tuberi Cati, an advocate living with AIDS, spoke about the urgent need for engaging activities for youths in Bua to prevent further spread of the virus. Having recently returned from an awareness campaign, she noted that many local youths lacked constructive outlets, often resorting to drinking and sexual activity.

Bua parliamentarian Josetaki Vula echoed these sentiments, urging the Ministry of Health to improve its outreach and education efforts to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS, particularly among the younger population.

This situation underscores the critical need for comprehensive education and community support initiatives to tackle the rising HIV/AIDS cases. By focusing on youth engagement and awareness, there is hope that communities can work together to reduce transmission rates and foster a healthier future.

In summary, the increase in HIV/AIDS cases in Lautoka is alarming, particularly among young people, highlighting the need for improved awareness and proactive community engagement to combat the spread of the virus.
