In October, there was a significant rise in crimes against children, with a reported increase of 39 percent. Disturbingly, 64 percent of these offences were of a sexual nature, while 28 percent were categorized as assault-related, and the remaining eight percent included other types of offences.

According to a police statement, the overall crime rate for the month rose by six percent compared to last year. Notably, all offenders in domestic incidents involving children were male family members, with 90 girls and 78 boys among the victims.

The statistics also indicated a concerning increase in serious crimes, which rose by 17 percent. Crimes against women saw a marginal increase of 0.5 percent, with the majority being assault-related. This includes 36 percent of the incidents being classified as domestic-related, highlighting the troubling trends in spousal or partner violence, where 67 incidents were attributed to these relationships.

Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew emphasized the importance of continuing collaborations with stakeholders to tackle the underlying issues contributing to these alarming rates of domestic violence against women and children. The increase in serious crimes and particularly in domestic violence, which surged by 42 percent in October, points to a pressing need for effective interventions.

While these statistics are alarming, it is hopeful to note that law enforcement is dedicated to addressing these issues proactively. By fostering cooperation with various community partners, there is potential for significant change in preventing future incidents.

Summary: October witnessed a 39 percent surge in crimes against children, primarily sexual offences, alongside a broader increase in overall crime rates. The police are focusing on domestic violence issues, collaborating with community stakeholders to tackle these challenges constructively.
