Surfing Showdown: Will Fiji’s Waves Decide the Final 5?

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism & Civil Aviation, Hon. Viliame Gavoka, visited the Corona Pro 2024 event yesterday, where surfers finally took to the waves after two days of inactivity caused by a lack of swell. Following a pause in competition on Tuesday and Wednesday, ideal conditions emerged on Thursday, setting the stage for a thrilling contest.

As the final regular-season event of the 2024 Championship Tour (CT), the Corona Fiji Pro has intensified the race for a place in the WSL Final 5. Surfers are fully aware that their performance here could determine their chances to qualify for the Lexus WSL Finals and compete for the World Title.

While John John Florence (HAW) and Caitlin Simmers (USA) have already clinched their spots in the final five, thirteen men and eight women still have the opportunity to join them. Notably, Simmers re-enters the world title race for the second consecutive year, having secured the No. 1 seed at Lowers.

For these competitors, the Corona Fiji Pro is their last chance to grab a significant opportunity in the Finals. With the contests in full swing, attention is fixed on Fiji’s waves as the top surfers in the world vie for victory. Minister Gavoka emphasized the event’s importance, highlighting its significance not only for the surfing community but also for the tourism sector in Fiji.

In related news, Gabriel Medina showcased his skills at Cloudbreak, proving he still possesses the magic touch in Fiji. Medina remains a contender for the WSL Final 5, starting strong in the Opening Round as he aims to make his mark in the competition.
