Hawaii’s Gabriela Bryan successfully defended her title at the Margaret River Pro in Western Australia, delivering a stunning performance that highlighted her powerful forehand surfing. Bryan triumphed over reigning world champion Caitlin Simmers, solidifying her position at the top of the rankings over her Californian competitor.

In the men’s competition, South African Jordy Smith clinched victory, defeating California’s Griffin Colapinto. Smith, who made his tour debut 18 years ago, showcased his enduring skill, now leading the championship rankings after securing his second win of the year.

Despite less-than-ideal conditions during the final day, both Simmers and Bryan began their face-off energetically. Simmers initially scored a commendable 7.17, but Bryan countered with an impressive near-perfect 9.5. She further increased her lead with a solid 7.83, totaling 17.33 points within the first 10 minutes of the final.

Bryan expressed her emotions post-competition, saying, “I just went out there and was like, I’ve just got to surf my heart out, and that’s what I did on that (9.5) wave. And then I was lucky enough to get a backup before it went flat, so yeah, I’m so stoked.”

Smith started his final with a great 8.5 on his first wave. Meanwhile, Colapinto, needing a solid score after a modest start, struggled to find another opportunity as the ocean calmed, ultimately handing Smith the well-deserved win.

The competitive spirit continues as the World Surf League’s next stop will be Lower Trestles in California, the surfing venue for the upcoming 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. The world will be watching as the top five men and women compete for the championship title in a one-day, winner-takes-all Finals Day in Fiji.

This event reinforces the resilience and talent within the sport, showcasing the highs and lows of competition while offering a platform for both established and rising surf stars. The excitement builds for future events, particularly as the surfing world gears up for the Olympic games.
