The Minister of Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru, has emphasized the necessity of support for women rugby players in Fiji, highlighting the challenges they face. This statement comes ahead of the highly anticipated HSBC SVNS Series.

During a traditional presentation of the i-tatau at the FMF Gymnasium, Saukuru candidly addressed the historical difficulties encountered by female rugby athletes, including discouragement and ridicule while pursuing their passion for the sport. He acknowledged that many players have faced severe obstacles and emphasized that these struggles should not be overlooked or forgotten.

“You must remember your peers who paved the way for the sport. Remember the struggles and use them to fuel and achieve more milestones in the game you deserve to play,” Saukuru encouraged the players.

As the Fijiana 7s team prepares to depart for Dubai this Sunday, the call for increased support and recognition of women’s rugby could not be more timely. Their journey embodies resilience and determination, showcasing the importance of fostering an inclusive environment where female athletes can thrive.

This message highlights the potential for growth and change in sports, offering hope that with recognition and support, women’s rugby in Fiji can continue to develop and inspire future generations.
