Chiefs from the Northern region of Fiji have expressed their backing for their paramount chief, the Tui Cakau, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, as the next President of Fiji. On Tuesday, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka announced that Ratu Naiqama is the Government’s official nominee for the position.
Tui Nadogo, Ratu Ilisaniti Malodali, voiced his support for the nominee while emphasizing the importance of including the chiefs in the decision-making process. He acknowledged the government’s decision but highlighted the necessity of representation from the Great Council of Chiefs to reflect the interests of the iTaukei, the traditional custodians of the land.
Tui Wailevu, Ratu Joseva Maivalili, mentioned that the presidential candidate should embody justice and righteousness. When asked if he endorsed the government’s nominee Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, he chose to remain neutral. Ratu Maivalili stressed the need for a leader capable of uniting all districts and provinces in Fiji and emphasized that the leadership must exemplify equality for the people.
He also commended the current President of Fiji and Tui Macuata, Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, for his guidance over the past four years and wished him well in his future endeavors. Ratu Maivalili highlighted the importance of having a President who respects God and the Christian values upon which the country was built.
He affirmed that they would honor the next president, even if their leadership style differs from that of previous leaders, and called for a visionary leader who can propel the nation forward with a stable approach to governance. Attempts to reach Tui Labasa, Ratu Jone Qomate, for comment were unsuccessful.
