Former Social Democratic Liberal Party MP Tanya Waqanika has voiced her strong support for Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s strategy to cultivate a broader parliamentary backing necessary to amend the 2013 Constitution. In an interview with FijiLive, Waqanika expressed confidence in Rabuka’s political acumen, stating, “He knows what he is doing. He is politically savvy,” indicating that it is appropriate to seek additional support for constitutional revisions.

Last week, during a media briefing, Rabuka revealed that while his Coalition Government currently commands approximately 70 percent of the 55 votes in Parliament—translating to 38 seats—it still falls short of the required 42 votes needed for the three-quarters majority crucial for constitutional amendments. With the opposition holding 16 votes, this poses a significant challenge to the amendment process.

Rabuka articulated that reviewing and amending the Constitution is a primary goal of his administration. He emphasized the importance of fostering dialogue and consensus-building among various communities to create a constitutional framework that reflects Fiji’s diverse and multicultural society. The Prime Minister remains optimistic about navigating these challenges as opportunities for meaningful engagement with stakeholders.

Waqanika’s endorsement of Rabuka’s efforts signals a hopeful trajectory for the coalition government, suggesting that their collective initiatives could lead to greater unity and collaboration within Fiji’s political landscape. This approach aims to enhance inclusivity in governance, ensuring that the voices of all Fijians are represented.

In summary, while the path to constitutional reform in Fiji presents hurdles, the support from figures like Waqanika and Rabuka’s proactive engagement suggest a positive outlook. There is a hopeful potential for a governance structure that better serves the diverse aspirations of all citizens, paving the way for a more democratic and cohesive future for Fiji.
