Alitia Bainivalu, the Minister for Fisheries, has provided significant support to the women’s cooperative in Somosomo, Taveuni, by granting a boat and a fibreglass dinghy in an effort to aid their fish business. This initiative aims to bolster the activities of local women involved in fishing, striving to enhance their livelihoods and business operations.

During a recent event, Minister Bainivalu expressed gratitude to the government for facilitating the provision of these resources, which are vital for the success of this cooperative. The assistance is expected to strengthen the community’s economic foundation by enabling women to engage more effectively in the fish trade.

Claude Prevost, a businessman in Taveuni’s fish industry, praised the government’s support, highlighting that the newly acquired boat will inevitably improve their operations and financial outcomes. The cooperative has already seen success in selling their fish products, and this additional support will further enhance their capabilities.

The Minister also encouraged the women to take good care of government assets they receive, emphasizing that teamwork and collaboration are key to achieving their goals and ensuring financial success.

In addition, plans are in motion to establish regulations for the sustainable management of fisheries, which could create a substantial impact on productivity and revenue potential for the local cooperatives.

This initiative exemplifies the commitment to empowering women in the community, promoting entrepreneurship, and providing resources that can lead to sustainable economic growth. As these women harness the tools they need, there is hope for thriving businesses that contribute significantly to the local economy, showcasing the resilience and potential of the community in Taveuni.
