Fisheries Minister Alita Bainivalu recently granted cooperative registrations to fishing groups from Namuana and Solovola villages in Kadavu, specifically Wailiwa Cooperative Limited and Solovola Cooperative Limited. This initiative aims to bolster their fishing ventures, with the distribution of essential fishing gear such as nets and cooler boxes.
Naomi Naio from the Solovola Women’s Club expressed gratitude for the timely support, noting that the assistance will significantly enhance their livelihoods, especially as families gather for the festive season in the village.
Additionally, as part of the Rural Housing Assistance Programme, over $35,000 worth of housing materials were supplied to Waqavesi Nariu. This effort is also part of the ongoing support for workers from the Vatukoula Gold Mine who have been affected by recent redundancies.
Minister Bainivalu encouraged cooperatives to capitalize on opportunities for growth. She also acknowledged the contributions of Deputy Prime Minister and Trades Minister Manoa Kamikamica and Rural Development Minister Sakiasi Raisevu Ditoka, emphasizing that these initiatives are steps towards “building stronger, self-sustaining communities.”
In summary, these efforts not only provide immediate relief and resources but also promote long-term community development and sustainability. The collaboration among various ministers and their support for local cooperatives reflect a positive commitment to enhancing the livelihoods of those in Kadavu, fostering a spirit of resilience and self-sufficiency in the region. This initiative could also inspire similar programs across other communities, reinforcing the importance of cooperative efforts in promoting economic growth and stability.
