Fisheries Minister Alita Bainivalu recently presented Cooperative Registrations to fishing groups from Namuana and Solovola villages in Kadavu, specifically Wailiwa Cooperative Limited and Solovola Cooperative Limited. This initiative aims to bolster the livelihoods of local fishers. To further support their endeavors, the groups received essential fishing gear, including nets and cooler boxes.
Naomi Naio from the Solovola Women’s Club expressed gratitude for this timely assistance, stating it would greatly benefit their families, especially as they prepare for the festive season when extended families return to the village.
Additionally, as part of the Rural Housing Assistance Programme, housing materials valued over $35,000 were provided to Waqavesi Nariu, aiding workers from the Vatukoula Gold Mine who have been affected by recent redundancies.
Minister Bainivalu urged cooperatives to leverage these opportunities for growth. She acknowledged the support of Deputy Prime Minister and Trade Minister Manoa Kamikamica as well as Rural Development Minister Sakiasi Raisevu Ditoka, emphasizing that these efforts are focused on “building stronger, self-sustaining communities.”
This initiative not only addresses immediate needs but also fosters long-term sustainability in local communities, showing a strong commitment to uplifting those affected by economic challenges.
In summary, the efforts by the Fisheries Minister and associated government officials aim to provide crucial support to local fishers and workers, ultimately contributing to stronger, more resilient communities. With this assistance, there is hope for economic growth and improved livelihoods in the region.
