A new supermarket, the Shop Plus Supermarket, has been officially inaugurated in Rakiraki, thanks to a $2 million investment from George Shiu Raj, a respected businessman and former politician. The establishment has created 40 new job opportunities, with a remarkable 80 percent of the positions filled by women, marking a significant step toward gender inclusivity in the local workforce.
Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka officiated the opening, remarking that the new supermarket is not just a retail outlet but a crucial boost for the economy of Rakiraki and the broader Ra Province, especially at a time when the area is recovering from the impacts of the Penang Sugar Mill’s closure. This closure had led to significant job losses and economic challenges for the community.
Mr. Raj expressed his gratitude for the community’s support throughout his journey and reaffirmed his commitment to investing in Ra for the betterment of local residents. He emphasized the supermarket’s mission to offer high-quality service and a unique shopping experience tailored to the needs of the community.
Notably, this opening joins a growing trend in Fiji, where new supermarkets are fostering economic growth and creating employment. The Shop Plus Supermarket aligns with other recent community-centered initiatives, such as the Family Choice Supermarket, focused on providing essential goods and supporting local producers.
This latest venture highlights the resilience of local entrepreneurs in Fiji, showcasing how dedicated investment can lead to positive community transformation and economic development. With continued efforts from business leaders like George Shiu Raj, there is hope for a vibrant and thriving local economy in Rakiraki and beyond.
