Supermarket Horror: Family’s Shocking Encounter with Armed Robbers

A routine grocery shopping trip became a traumatic experience for a family from Samabula when they encountered an armed robbery at Alison Supermarket in Laucala Beach, Suva, on Monday. Sushmita Narayan and her parents were shopping for meat when masked assailants armed with cane knives stormed into the store.

The family was left in shock after witnessing the unfolding events, initially mistaking the cashier’s urgent cry for help as a prank. “We heard a loud shout and thought it was a joke,” Ms. Narayan recounted, noting the moment escalated quickly when they heard a bottle being thrown, signaling the seriousness of the situation.

In a harrowing encounter, one of the masked robbers approached Ms. Narayan, brandishing a knife. Although she initially resisted, her father’s insistence led her to comply and hand over her bag. Unfortunately, when they emerged from the supermarket, they discovered that Ms. Narayan’s bag, which contained her phone, money, and car keys, had been taken.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of crime and the potential dangers families face in everyday environments. However, the family is grateful to have returned home safely despite the loss of possessions, emphasizing the importance of family resilience in the face of adversity.

As communities come together to support one another in the aftermath of such incidents, there is hope that increased safety measures can be implemented in public spaces to prevent future occurrences. Building a safer environment is a shared responsibility, and the conversation around personal safety is crucial for community welfare.
