The MV Sullivan, which sank in Suva Harbour, will not be moved until a court case involving Fiji Ports Ltd and the vessel’s owner, Venu Shipping (Fiji) Ltd., is resolved. Joeli Cawaki, the CEO of the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF), confirmed ongoing discussions with Venu Shipping’s managing director, Ben Naidu, regarding the situation.

Cawaki noted that since the MV Sullivan’s accident in 2015, there has been a persistent court case between the two parties. Fiji Ports is currently insisting on the removal of the wreckage, which falls within their jurisdiction.

Cawaki emphasized the importance of proper documentation and stressed that a legal review will be conducted to determine liability in the matter. The situation illustrates the complexity of maritime law and the need for clear legal frameworks when dealing with maritime accidents.

This case serves as a reminder of the challenges that arise in maritime safety regulations and the responsibilities of companies operating in such environments. While the MV Sullivan remains untouched for now, hope lies in the resolution of the legal issues, which could pave the way for a meaningful solution.
