Sunken Ship Saga: Legal Battle Holds MV Sullivan Hostage

Spread the love

The MV Sullivan, which has been sunken in Suva Harbour since 2015, will remain in its current location due to an ongoing court case between Fiji Ports Ltd and the ship’s owner, Venu Shipping (Fiji) Ltd. Joeli Cawaki, CEO of the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF), confirmed that discussions have taken place with Venu Shipping’s Managing Director, Ben Naidu.

Cawaki stated that the matter revolves around the ownership and responsibility for the sunken vessel, which is situated within the boundaries of Fiji Ports. “There’s a court case still pending and ongoing in court,” he explained. Fiji Ports is challenging Venu Shipping to remove the vessel, which remains stranded as legal proceedings continue.

The uncertainty surrounding the MV Sullivan highlights the complexities involved in maritime law and ownership disputes. Cawaki emphasized the importance of completing the necessary documentation, indicating that a thorough legal review will be conducted once the current proceedings are concluded to determine which party is liable.

This situation, while concerning, serves as an important reminder of the legal frameworks governing maritime incidents and the need for clear accountability in such matters. It also offers an opportunity for both parties to work towards a resolution that could ultimately lead to the safe removal of the vessel, improving conditions in Suva Harbour.

As negotiations continue, there is hope that all involved will reach a fair and timely resolution, paving the way for restoring the harbour’s safety and aesthetics.
