Ratu Sukuna Park is set to reopen on August 19 after several years of delays. Suva City Council’s acting CEO and chairperson, Tevita Boseiwaqa, addressed public concerns about the park’s lengthy closure during an interview. He acknowledged the various factors contributing to the delays, including attempts to modify the design, particularly regarding the inclusion of a café.
Boseiwaqa explained that by removing the café from the plans, the overall cost for the Suva City Council was reduced from $13 million to $7 million. He noted that the park would feature changes to its overall appearance, with a larger podium than before, along with new benches, charging ports, and lighting to enhance the park’s usability. A security fence will also be installed around the area.
He encouraged the public to treat the park with respect, emphasizing that much of the infrastructure is owned or used by the community. Boseiwaqa stressed the shared responsibility in maintaining the park for everyone’s enjoyment, urging both Suva City Council staff and visitors to contribute to its upkeep.
